It was a cloudy day and I was at the location of the 2007 Caledon Kids of Steel race and I was pumped. This year I was old enough to compete in the Ontario Cup Series. Caledon was race number one and Provincial Championships which meant double the points for the series. We got to transition at 9:30 and I found a great spot right next to a pole so my stuff was easy to find. Then I helped out some of my taining buddies and left transition to whatch my friends race. It was a long time till I raced but I warmed myself up about 20 minutes before my race and then headed onto the pool deck. When it was time get in the pool I jumped in and waited for the start. Tweeeeeet! We were off. Being a swimmer I went out fast but not to fast where as everyone else went full out. And the craziest part was, I was leading the whole time. I got to transition and flew through that before I grabbed my bike and started to fly. I had to do 4 laps and this one hill was just killing me. Finally, I was done a hard but fast bike. I got on the run thinking I had a lot of ground to make up. Going out on the run I felt good but on the way back I was dead. I had achilles tendonitis and that really starting to kill. I somehow powered up the last big climb and I had a slight downhill to the finish. I finished the race and immediatly started to ice my ankles. about ten to fifteen minutes later I heard Barrie Sheply, the commentater, anounce that the unafishial top three were: Michael Seifert in third, Adrian Gavrilov in second, and Myles Zagar in first.
I turned to my Dad and said,”Dad, I just won”.
“No”, he said,”you came in fourth or fith”.
He woundn’t believe me so I limped over to the podium and got my award. Now I had a acual chance of winning the Ontario Cup Series. I had to train hard for one week so I could prepare for my race in two weeks. It turns out that I if I come top three at this race I’m on the Eastern Regional Canadian’s team that’s going to Montreal. Its also part of the HSBC Triathon Series so I might some of you guys there.
Great work Myles! You also made the paper up in that area with a nice colour photo in the sports pages. A friend from work brought it in and said she saw the Running Free shirt so she brought it in to show me.
Congrats!
Way to go Myles! You should be very proud of yourself. Everyone at Running Free salutes you. Your picture in the paper is a big deal!
Keep racing hard
Great job Myles! It’s hard to keep going when you are in pain. Believe me I know the feeling! You are obviously a mentally strong athlete. That will take you far!
Awesome article Myles. I don’t know which I like more, watching you race or reading about them in report. Your biggest fan, Dad
