When I first read about this race the time trial start was really intriguing.
Swim
I thought that it would allow for pretty quick swim (all relative as I don’t swim that quickly) since everybody would be nicely strung out. Turned out that was the case and I did have a much better swim this week. My time didn’t reflect the better swim but there was about a 60+ second run up to transition. Overall I felt good coming out of the water and was ready for a good bike.
Bike
Took a quick 20 minute warm up before the race so knew that it was going to be windy. After a mediocre transition (I have to work on these) I was out for hopefully a quick 30k ride. Over the past few weeks I have been playing a little with my positioning in hopes that I could generate more power. I am getting closer as I had a pretty good ride overall. I never did get a good idea of where the wind was coming from but it seemed to be a headwind most of the way, though stronger coming back than going out. Rode strong and stayed aero for the majority of the ride and was only passed by 2 riders, unfortunately one in my agegroup and another from a relay team. Overall I was happy averaged 36.4 kph which was a nice improvement over Binbrook.
Run
After a better transition headed out onto the run. I am finally starting to get some speed on the run. I was able to run strong and run down the guy from my agegroup that had passed me on the bike. This is where the time trial start is a bit challenging. I had no idea where I was with relation to others. I just tried to run as hard as I could and see where I ended up.
Overall I was happy with my day, I finished 15th overall and 5th in my agegroup. It is hard to believe how fast the guys 40+ are. Saw Roger on the run and he looked to be having a good day as well.
I think that this was a really good race. Other than the long run up to T1 it was a great course and recommend it as a good race to do next year.
That wind was puzzling wasn’t it? I thought we were going to get nailed on the way back after the turnaround but it never ready happened.
You looked solid out there on the run. I must have been putting on a good act when I waved to you running by cuz I was just in cruise mode til the end at that point.
See you at the next race.
