I have raced in a one piece tri suit for 3 years and this is
the first year I went with a 2 piece outfit. My previous one piece suit has performed very well to this point but I wanted to go to the 2 piece option.
Upon selecting my new tri short, I tried on several different products. I tried on different designs from the same manufacturer in addition to those from other manufacturers.
The first thing I noticed is that the CWX short supported me throughout the entire length of the pant, not just at the bottom cuff where I noticed a localized tightness in the other brands. The CWV conditioning web provided great support without there being any localized pressure right at the conditioning webs. The Conditioning Webs do not extend as far down the thigh as my CWX Pro short (as these have a shorter inseam) and hence deliver less support along the quads and hamstrings than the Pro shorts. Comparing to the non-web designs, the CWX tri shorts still offer more support in the quads and hamstrings. The short has Coolmax and Lycra for moisture wicking.
Running:
Great flexibility and movement. The chamois design is a common lightweight polyester design found in many other designs and does not affect my stride.
Cycling:
It was a bit more slippery in the saddle as with my pervious tri suit. This did not present a problem, but was noticeable. I have noticed that one of my cycling shorts gets a bit slippery in the saddle as well.
Racing:
Shorts felt great through the tri’s and du’s. I felt comfortable in them and the shorter inseam kept me cooler in the hot weather. I cannot say that the shorts made me run faster that I would have normally. I did post some smokin’ times, but I think that is attributed to training and peaking correctly. I have to say that the shorts felt GREAT throughout the entire race, I had great flexibility and support in them and I never second guessed my decision to buy these shorts!
I love these shorts too, I don’t race short course without them.
I just have not been brave enough to try them at an Ironman yet.
I can’t speak for the ironman, but I would most likely use it in the half ironman.
Rog: lube up and GO! 😉
