In the 8 years I’ve participated in this race its only been sunny maybe 2 years. But fortunately the sun decided to come out on May 25, 2008. As usual I made sure my family and I arrived at the race early. I met up with some of my training buddies from my group and we headed into transition to set up our stuff. After that I spent the morning trying to stay out of the sun and cheer on friends. My heat started late at 1pm so I had tons of time on my hands
Warmup
I warmed up at 12:30 and it consisted of some drills (ABC’s) and some light jogging with some high pace running at the end.
Swim
I had a great swim. The swim was in an 18m pool so I almost felt dizzy when I got out. It was a 300m swim and I was able to average a 1:20 per 100m (this is an estimate because my swim time wasn’t recorded till I ran another 50m to the mat so it says I was a 1:30 average). I was first out the pool and I wanted to catch one of my buddies in the heat before.
Bike
I must have been lucky because my bike was equaly as good as my good as my swim. The bike consisted of 4 3km loops so I could see if I was gaining on my friend in the heat before. And I was. Each time I went around I could see myself gaining time on my opponents. I exited the bike feeling great.
Run
Okay. Maybe I wasn’t feeling as good as I thought I was. Right off the start on the first hill I threw up twice (I thiink it was the tuna sandwich and Cliff Bar). After that though I was able to get into a good rythym pass a few of my buddies. Yes, mission accomplished. Or not. I knew my other friend was an awesome runner so I picked up my pace at the turnaround. This was mostly because I needed to gain momentum for monstrous hill that lay ahead. I powered up the hill and was home free. I crossed the line and posted the fastest time of the day. Coodos to my little brother on finishing third in a new age group and to my buddy Adam who crashed on a corner during the bike and still finished second and posted up the No. 1 run time of the day.
