Maybe it is all hype and propaganda, but I like to be safe rather than sorry. After reading a ton of articles (there is an excellent one written by Running Free’s own Nick Capra), I finally bought some BPA-Free water bottles.
I was fortunate enough to get my hands on a stainless steel 40 oz Klean Kanteen (I say fortunate enough because I picked up the last few before Running Free was sold out again) and decided to pick up a 750 ml Camelback Better Bottle. I love them both.
On top of not worrying about any cancer causing chemicals being leached into my water, both bottles have many handy features. Since I have been trapped on crutches for the past 2 months, the Camelback’s Classic Cap and the Klean Kanteen’s Loop cap makes them both extremely easy to tote around on one finger while moving around, even when going up and down the stairs on my crutches. Their loops also allow for them to be clipped to a carabiner and taken anywhere.
I appreciate the durability of both as well. I’ve already dropped both several times and only sustained the odd scratch. While they do not look as pristine as they once did, they still get the job done. In addition, since the Klean Kanteen is stainless steel, it should last forever and not transmit any residual flavours from one drink to another.
They are both super easy to clean. Wash them by hand or pop them in the dishwasher and you are good to go. Their wide openings help with cleaning, and make adding ice cubes to your drink an easy thing to do.
They both have lids (bought separately) that can be swapped with your existing one to suit your needs, and the bottles come in a variety of sizes and colours. The Camelback Better Bottle comes in 3 sizes (500 ml, 750 ml, 1L) and 5 colours while the Klean Kanteen comes in 12 oz, 18 oz, 27 oz, and 40 oz sizes, and 7 colours.
I make use of both of these bottles every day and highly recommend them. They are mega handy for taking to work, and due to my mobility (or lack of), I keep water in a Klean Kanteen upstairs in my home office (it doesn’t get gunky no matter how many days it sits there), and tote around my Camelback Better Bottle wherever I go.
So if you can get your hands on either one of these products, snap them up, it is money well spent.
Here is another article to check out about plastic water bottles if you are not convinced.
Hi,
I read your review…you are right, two great bottles. I also picked up the new stainless bottle by Alternatives to Plastic (I got mine on ebay). Its 600ml, has a contoured design which I love because it fits in my bike cage. It also has a wider neck so adding ice and cleaning are a snap. The price was right, too, just a fraction of what other bottles of the same waulity go for, $10.00!!
Hi,
Thanks a lot for your review. Just read it a month ago and I am now the proud owner of the 40oz stainless steel klean kanteen (I got mine online at singhealthstore) . It took me a month to get it as the stocks were so short in Singapore. Do not have to endure the plastic taste anymore!!!
Nice review. Both of these bottles are great picks. Another point to add would be to go with BPA-free plastic (CamelBak) or stainless steel (Klean Kanteen) over aluminum, as aluminum bottles (such as SIGG bottles) need to be coated/lined in order to be food safe.
In case anyone is interested in custom decorated bottles or ordering for a running group/team, we offer the BPA-free CamelBak bottle in all sizes as well as several different stainless steel options.
Thanks for your article- I love my newest addition, the Klean Kanteen 27 oz Prevention Purple! THanks!
