Sunday November 23rd
Whitby Yacht Club,Gordon St.Whitby,On.
With the race season winding down in a big hurry, this feel-good little race on the shores of Lake Ontario, east of Toronto merits a look-see.Offering 5k and 10k distances it has something for everyone.
This is the 4th time I’ve done this race, mainly because of the friendliness of race directors Ian and Brenda Barron. These two really care about us runners having a good time at their events. The overall and age group prizes have varied from backpacks to trophies and they change up the race-kit freebie most years also, avoiding that cotton t-shirt for a few years now.
As for the course,it too has varied over the years, now running around the streets, marinas and waterfront trails of Whitby after a few years at Rotary Pk.
To avoid the one hill in the area we ran a figure eight loop to make up the 10mile distance. The ice and snow of the past week were mostly gone but a couple of areas still required some careful foot placement.
All things considered,it was a good day for racing as the sun co-operated with race time to make temperatures quite comfortable.
Fellow RF athletes Esther Tam and Anthony Dale enjoyed the race and a bowl of chilli afterwards and the only sour note was that we all queried the exactness of the 10mile course. Then again, maybe we all DID run PB’s by a minute or two!No worries,it was a good day regardless.
The 10mile race was won by uber runner Pedrag Mladenovic,he of the 1:07 half marathon PB !! Second place went to up and coming Canadian distance runner and Brooks Canada Marathon Project athlete Lauren King, and yours truly in third.
A distant 3rd I might add!
Cheers
Anthony
