If you are going to be stuck on a desert island, be sure to pack a pair of Sable goggles. Even if you’re not stuck on an island and perhaps training for your first triathlon or entering an Ironman as a seasoned racer – I would still recommend a pair of Sable Goggles for you.
Just to give you a bit of my background; I used to swim competitively in high school and also with the York University varsity swim team (we swam 6 days a week – sometimes twice a day). I love swimming and I love being in the water. What I don’t love is swimming with poor quality equipment. So when it comes to selecting a pair of goggles, there are a few key functional features that I look for:
1) Clarity – (anti-fog) it’s important that your goggles can delivery crystal clear sight.
2) Comfort – if you’re going to spend hours swimming every week then you want to be sure your goggles are comfortable for your prolonged training and also for racing.
3) Leak-proof – the last thing you want to do is keep stopping to drain your goggles during your swim.
I tried 2 different versions of Sables. The first one was the Recreational RS 922 and I wasn’t quite impressed with them as I was with the Competitive RS 101. The RS 922 gave me some water leakage problems and I tried tightening the strap to prevent this; only to feel as if my eyeballs were being sucked out by the time I hit 50min into my swim so I had to take them off to give my eyes a rest. I ran into another triathlete who had the RS 922 and he experienced the same issues I had with the discomfort, leakage, and also the occasional fogginess. Also, since the strap of the RS 922 goggles consisted of one thick band, I found that the band would occasionally flip downward if I pushed off the wall too hard on a flip turn. I was really bummed since I had been looking forward to trying out Sable WaterOptics.
I almost gave up until I came across the Sable CompetitiveRS 101 goggles. Wow was there a huge difference! The Sable Competitive RS 101 delivered on all the importantfeatures that any novice or experienced swimmer would look for. I had crystal clear sight and never had to stop and wipe the lenses. The goggles were extremely comfortable and I wore them for long swims (i.e.1hour 45min) without any problems at all (it felt as if I wasn’t wearing anything). I believe this is due to the double strap of the model… I think two straps help distribute the pressure more evenly over the head (instead of in one place likethe RS 922). The RS 101 goggles also did not leak one bit. They fit snuggly on my face and I didn’t have to set the straps super tight to prevent leakage.Another feature that is important if you are swimming outdoors is UV protection.
All Sable goggles offer UVA/UVB protection. If you are looking for a pair of high quality goggles – besure to pick up a pair of Sable WaterOptics Competitive RS 101 goggles!
Hah just posted a review with the exact opposite issues. I had problems with the 101’s, and love the 922’s. Weird!
That’s funny. Perhaps it has something to do with the shape of my face?
I’m Chinese and have a relatively flat face/nose. The other swimmers I talked to were Caucasian though and they seemed to prefer the 101s as well.
Would you be interested in selling me your 101s Syd?
