Ever wonder how some people can put in really big mileage weeks that also include some really brutal speedwork sessions and never seem to get sick. I used to wonder this all the time but now I’m one of those athletes. How you ask??
Well, one reason is simply progression of my subsequent training regimens. But this still isn’t enough when the mileage and speed really cranks up during the final 1-2 months prior to the full marathon race. Sleep is obviously a huge factor as without the rest your muscles don’t have a chance to repair. And if they don’t have a chance to repair, you won’t increase strength and endurance at the rate you would expect to.
But for me, the single most difficult issue in my training would be those untimely colds that would kick up right at the worst possible point in my training. Of course this is always when the mileage is at or near the maximal point (130-150km) and when the speed session are their longest and most important. This would cause me to have to back off or risk full blown illness. Of course, when you do this you never really maximize your training.
The other really important piece of the puzzle, the piece that keeps you healthy, is vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, etc., etc., etc. Yes you can get all of this exclusively from your diet but how many of us actually are able to. Even if you are able to, how many of us actually truly understand what all we need and in what concentrations to ensure maximal benefit is achieved? Certainly not me.

Based on my ongoing and sizeable improvements with each marathon season, it’s not hard to believe that my training plans continue to become more and more difficult and taxing on my body. But now my body seems to be able to handle it and I’m not cutting back on my heavy weeks. Obviously the desired training approach! And my times continue to improve.
