Vancouver Sun Run

Race:  Vancouver Sun Run (10km)

When:  April 21, 2013

This year I was heading to Vancouver to participate in the Canadian Masters Badminton Championships and after talking to my good friend from Vancouver who is also an avid runner I found out that the Vancouver Sun Run 10km was being held a couple of days before my tournament.  After researching more about the event I discovered that this is the second largest running race with about 50,000 people participating each year!  I was astounded that this race attracted so many participants.  I thought it would be a great race to participate in and obviously not a PB run due to the number of people running and so would be a great training run for me while I was in Vancouver.

The race had multiple waves starts according to your estimated finish time.  In order to be seeded and eligible for the first wave start time you needed to submit race results from the previous year.  I hadn’t raced a 10km in a couple of years so I had to start in the second wave which I thought would help me pace myself a little and not go out too hard.  My plan for the race was to go easy the first 5km and pick it up for the last half of the race.   There was a lot of people and so the first 5-6km was mostly trying not to trip over people and find some space to run however, this stopped me from going out too hard.  The race course was great and went through the downtown, Stanley Park and Granville Island.

A great race venue and excellent organization of this event.  Definitely a race to do if you are considering visiting Vancouver.
