Canada Army Run – 2014

logo

MedalI participated in the Canada Army half marathon in Ottawa – September 21, 2014. This was the first time I’ve participated in this event. The race was sold out at a cap of 12,000 participants for the half marathon and 13,000 for the 5k.

The event organizers planned a weekend of activities with a military equipment expo with hands-on activities for kids (and adults too!); military bands and musicians, race expo and the pasta dinner the night before — which was held in a mess tent and prepared and served by military personnel. We had the opportunity to hear from several injured soldiers who have served for our country as well as Rich Hansen.

Race day began with an opening ceremony followed by the 5k race. The 5k finished before the half marathon started which meant the course was clear for the half marathon runners.

Both the 5k and half had several waves — the first wave was for the injured soldiers — very inspirational to see them all start the race together

We had the awesome privilege of running alongside soldiers during the race and although it started to rain quite heavily and persisted for approx. the last 10k, there was no complaining knowing what our fellow runners have endured in the field for the rest of us!

The half marathon route change this year to allow us to run through Rideau Hall where the Governor General – the Right Honorable David Johnston – stood in the rain and gave the athletes high 5s as we ran by.  Amazing support!!!

Overall it’s a great course — a few rough spots on the roads as we worked our way through construction zones.

The medals are quite unique and a nice memento of the day.

I would love to run this event again in the future.
