Race Report-Easter Seals 5km

I am very sporadic and picky regarding what races I am going to run. So when I had the opportunity to race the Easter Seals 5km in May, I jumped at the opportunity. Located in Newmarket, and right across the street from my Grandma’s house, it was close to home and an excuse for a visit! She has never seen me race, so this was even more exciting.

Nearing the end of May, the weather was unpredictable. Some mornings warmed up quickly and others were still chilly. I was slightly discouraged when I realised that race morning was going to be a hot one. Some don’t mind racing in the heat, but I feel suffocated even on an easy run in the summer! I decided to make the best of it regardless. I was aiming for under 20 minutes for the 5k, so I told myself I would not be roasting for too long.

Kit pick up was fast and easy. The race director told me this was her first year taking over the race. Despite this, it was well organised. The course is an out and back that goes through the Tom Taylor Trail system. It has lots of rolling hills, and is not closed to the public, making it a bit cramped at times. The volunteers were great, and marshalled the race well.

I reached my goal of under 20 minutes. Knowing my Grandma was at the finish line and that’s where the water was made me push the last 800 meters! I was happy when I realised I was eligible for an award. Upper Canada Mall is a sponsor of the race, so the awards were gift cards to the mall. Something everyone can use!

Overall, I would definitely recommend this race. Hopefully it will fit into my race schedule in Spring of 2016.
