Lines and Loops Trail Race

Lines and Loops Trail Race

In a year where global debates on the corporatization of trail running have been widespread, it’s reassuring to know that there are still local, beautiful, grassroots trail races out there that are lovingly created for the simple joy of sharing natural areas with other runners. That homespun (but still well-organized) vibe permeated the wonderful Lines and Loops Trail Race, put on by Green Newton Adventures. Held on a hidden gem of a conversation area just each of Peterborough, ON, of forests and fields with beautiful views along a substantial ridge, Lines and Loops offered something for everyone: a kids 1km race, a 3km for slightly bigger kids; a 6km, 18km, and 30km races (not to mention relay options for the 18km and 30km races, and a hiking option for the 6km, which I think is a fabulous idea!). The course was a 6km loop, meaning that runners completing the longer options passed by the festive Start/Finish area, to the warm cheers and support of loved ones and other trail running community members.

The course was a beautiful mix of single and double-track mountain biking trails, through forests and fields. There was a surprising amount of elevation gain on the course (my gps tracked over 400m of vertical for the 18km race), with switchback hills and some beautiful views of the local countryside at the top of the escarpment. The trails were in excellent condition, clearly marked, and made for a good midsummer challenge! There were some technical spots on the 6km course (used by the 6, 18 and 30km options) featuring roots, rocks, and a few mountain bike manmade features, so I’d recommend running this race with trail shoes and slowing down at those places of the course.

Lines and Loops also featured some other perks: a free trail running shoe demo option, where runners could try out shoes from Merrell Canada, a plantable, handcrafted 100% biodegradable earth finisher’s medal loaded with indigenous wildflower seeds that support pollinators, a tree planted for every race registration, and some plentiful, excellent (and included in race registration) race photos.

Lines and Loops is an excellent mid-summer option for a runner who is looking for a race that cares about the environment and its runners, while also offering a competitive and challenging race. The organizers are friendly and detail-oriented, while clearly being passionate about the sport and offering an environmentally sustainable event. The race is welcoming to runners (and hikers) of all fitness levels, and the looped course provides excellent opportunities for loved ones to spectate and support the runners. I highly recommend the Lines and Loops Trail Race!
