The 4th Annual Every Child Matters Race took place on Saturday, June 15th, 2024, and was another great success! Hosted by Ni Dakinan and Timiskaming First Nation, the event features a 100m Tiny Tots run, as well as 1K, 2K, 5K, and 10K races for all ages. It is a fundraiser for the Anishinaabe Long Term Care Center.
The day begins with an Opening Ceremony featuring opening prayers, drumming, and dancing. This year’s keynote speaker was Dr. James Makokis speaking on Truth and Reconciliation. There is also an awards ceremony and barbecue lunch before the closing ceremony.
I ran the 5K event and once again thoroughly enjoyed it. The race course is clearly marked and follows main roads through the town of Notre Dame du Nord; there is great community support, as well as Tribal Police directing traffic flow and ensuring safe crossing of the highway.
I look forward to this event every year, and I guarantee I will be back in 2025!
