My most catastrophic racing experience was: This year Jill and I were really excited about doing the 2 day Storm the Trent Elite Stage Adventure Race. We had everything ready to go until 3 weeks before the race when our support crew had to cancel on us. We spent the next couple weeks trying to find a replacement to no avail. We emailed the race director and told him we would have to drop back to the 1 day race that did not need any support on the Thursday, then on Friday 3 hours before the race briefing I happened to be talking to one of the other racers who offered for us to use his support as well. We quickly put our stuff together, dropped the kids of (a half hour drive each way) and rushed to the meeting. The next day I was sick and had a horrible race, but we were able to finish in 4th. On the second day I was feeling much better and we were able to move up to 3rd, only a few minutes behind 2nd.
My most memorable racing experience was: My most memorable racing experience would have to be the 20 hour canoe-a-thon from Quest for a Cure 2004. We started out with a nice run to the top of Mont Ste Marie then back down and into the canoes. We made a long stop in the middle of the night to find an unmanned checkpoint that wasnâ™t there, then continued on through a beautiful night. Morning brought high wind and big waves but we pushed on into early afternoon before we were stopped after our final portage. We still had a few hours of paddling left and were already over their longest estimates by 7 or 8 hours. I donâ™t think they pre-ran the course. But for all that I had a great time with my teammates, and we did really well for our first race together.
Favourite Racing Gear: Salomon Packvest – Very comfortable to run in and easy to stash food close at hand
Favourite Race: Storm the Trent - I have seen this race from the perspective of a competitor and as a volunteer. I think that it is the best race in Ontario for both. The race is always challenging and extremely well organized. As a volunteer you feel appreciated and again the organization is extraordinary, 2 things you don't always find when volunteering.
Favourite Race Food: Raspberry GU2O, Plain and Vanilla Bean GU gel, Clif Blocks
