Athletic Goals: Generally, I am focused on running faster while maintaining (or improving) my cycling fitness. I would also like to work on swimming but thats a longer term goal. In 2012 I would like to set some new PRs in races I have run before. I hope to complete a half-IM distance duathlon (Welland) and my first marathon. I plan to spend more time trail running this summer which is new to me.
My most catastrophic racing experience was: I was doing the Raccoon Rally Road race in Alleghany State Park in NY. About half way through the second 40km lap I was in the small lead group when I touched wheels with another rider and went down. I landed hard on my right knee, and suffered a pretty bad laceration on my knee. I picked myself up right away and had a quick look at the damage - it didn't seem to be bleeding too badly. Given that my options were to either walk or ride until i found someone that could help, i rode. Once I got going, it didn't seem too bad so i decided i should just finish the race - I think I had about 20km to go and it was mainly flat and downhill. I finished the race and then went to deal with the injury. The best medical aid to be found was an old dirty first aid kit that the sheriff found in his trunk. I decided that I would be better off cleaning it up, wrapping it with the cleanest gauze I could find and heading for the border before the ambulance came and hauled me off to the hospital for stitches (I didn't have out of country medical insurance). After signing the EMS form indicating that I was "refusing medical care" we were off. After a couple hours driving, a border crossing, and another 6 hours in the ER i had 12 stitches to show for my efforts...
