About Me: Runner who focusses on races from 5K to the marathon.
Sports: Running, Rollerblading, Bike Riding
Athletic Goals: Place high in Masters Category in races.
My most catastrophic racing experience was: The 1997 Boston Marathon. I was prepared, however, my self discipline in pacing this race failed. I went out too fast for my conditioning, which is easy to do with a steady downhill for the first 5 miles. I was ok up to the half-way point reaching a time of 1:20, however, my legs were feeling tired. Around 18 miles my left quad starting seizing followed by my right. By this time I was past 20 miles where the crowds were plentiful. I found out this day how persistent crowds can be. They were so supportive and encouraged me to keep going despite the pain. I finished in 3:06, well off the pace at half-way.
My most memorable racing experience was: The Bruce Trail Survival Run in 1999, a tough 20-mile race comprised of 50% roads / 50% trails. Two of us led the field from the start, until around 15 miles when the other runner suddenly slipped and banged his knee on a rock. He was crying out in pain so I stopped. He told me to leave and soon after I made a wrong turn. After realizing this, I turned around and met up with him as he was starting to jog. Later, his injury was bothering him and he couldnâ™t hold the pace. He wished me well and I ran the last 3 km trail section alone and won the race in 2:14.
